A Star is Born was released to theaters last month but has already received rave reviews, some even saying it is the movie to beat at the Oscars. It stars Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, and is a gritty but compelling story complete with a beautiful score. Trailer here.

What is it about?
The movie follows Jackson, an alcoholic rockstar, and Ally, a waitress who sings at bars, as they meet and fall in love. As Ally rises in stardom, Jackson recedes further into his destructive addictions, and this has drastic effects on their relationship.
Positive Content
While Ally and Jackson are flawed, they have a very loving relationship, and both try to put each other first. Jackson has so much faith in Ally’s abilities and supports her in her career. Additionally, Jackson’s brother, Bobby (played by Sam Elliot), supports him and devotes his life to helping him, even though Jackson is very self-destructive. The movie promotes the importance of art and how it can be a medium to voice your opinions and what you see in the world.
Negative Content
The movie explores what is means to be a star and how this can ultimately be destructive to people. It also centers around an alcoholic/drug abuser, who drinks to excess and uses both prescription and illegal drugs. The negative effects of those substances are realistic and often difficult to watch. While it is clear that Ally and Jackson love each other, Ally does enable Jackson’s substance abuse (or at least does not try to stop him) until it becomes too much to handle. Suicide is a theme that is addressed (no further spoilers). Additionally, there is some strong sexuality in the movie, such as passionate kisses and several sex scenes showing nude backs or the side of breasts. There is also a scene with two people in the bath (no nudity shown) and a glimpse of a women getting out of the bath naked (nonsexual). Language is also strong, with frequent uses of f***, s***, a**, t*ts, and taking the Lord’s name in vain
Conclusion
A Star is Born tells a very real story about people with inner demons. While it is a very compelling movie, it is not meant for children or even younger teens, and should only be watched by very mature teens or adults who understand the movie's themes and how destructive the lifestyles of the characters are. Overall, it is a beautiful movie but should be viewed with caution.
